Author Guidelines

Journal of University Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (JUPSP)

The Journal of University Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (JUPSP) is a peer-reviewed, open-access medical journal committed to promoting high-quality research and advancing clinical knowledge in medicine and allied health sciences. Authors are advised to read and follow these guidelines carefully before submitting their manuscripts.


1. Scope of the Journal

JUPSP publishes high-quality research and educational material relevant to the practice of medicine, surgery, and related specialties. The following types of articles are accepted:

  • Original Articles

  • Review Articles

  • Case Reports

  • Short Communications

  • Letters to the Editor

  • Editorials


2. Manuscript Submission

  • Manuscripts should be submitted electronically through the official JUPSP submission portal or via the editorial email.

  • Submissions must be accompanied by a cover letter declaring that the work is original and has not been published or submitted elsewhere.

  • The corresponding author must ensure that all co-authors approve the final version before submission.

  • Each manuscript must include a title page, abstract, main text, references, tables, and figures (if any).


3. Manuscript Preparation

3.1. Title Page

Include:

  • Title of the article

  • Full names of all authors with affiliations

  • Name, email, and contact of corresponding author

  • Word count (excluding abstract, tables, and references)

  • Source(s) of funding and conflict of interest statement

3.2. Abstract and Keywords

  • Original and review articles must include a structured abstract (up to 250 words) with the following headings: Objective, Methods, Results, and Conclusion.

  • Case reports may include an unstructured abstract (up to 150 words).

  • Provide 3–6 keywords using MeSH terms (Medical Subject Headings).

3.3. Main Text

Use clear, concise, and grammatically correct English.

  • Original Articles: should follow the IMRaD format — Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion.

  • Case Reports: should include Introduction, Case Presentation, and Discussion.

  • Review Articles: should summarize current literature with appropriate citations.

  • Use headings and subheadings where necessary for clarity.

3.4. Tables and Figures

  • Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1).

  • Each must have a descriptive title and be cited in the text.

  • Figures must be submitted in high resolution (JPEG or TIFF, ≥300 dpi).

  • Do not duplicate data in both tables and figures.


4. Ethical Considerations

  • Research involving human subjects must include a statement of ethical approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB) or Ethics Committee.

  • Informed consent must be obtained and documented for all human participants.

  • For animal studies, authors must confirm adherence to institutional or national guidelines and ethical standards.

  • Authors must disclose any conflicts of interest or financial relationships relevant to the manuscript.


5. Authorship Criteria

Authorship should follow the ICMJE guidelines, which require that each author has made substantial contributions to:

  1. The conception or design of the work, or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data;

  2. Drafting or revising the article critically; and

  3. Final approval of the version to be published.
    Those who do not meet all three criteria should be acknowledged appropriately.


6. Plagiarism Policy

  • All manuscripts are screened using Turnitin prior to review.

  • A similarity index of less than 19% (excluding references) is acceptable.

  • Plagiarism, fabrication, or unethical conduct will result in immediate rejection and may be reported to relevant authorities or institutions.


7. References

  • References must follow the Vancouver style.

  • Number references consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text.

  • Use superscript numerals (e.g., “…as previously described.¹”).

  • Provide full details for each reference, including all authors if six or fewer; if more than six, list the first six followed by et al.

  2. World Health Organization. Global report on diabetes. Geneva: WHO; 2022.


8. Peer Review Process

  • JUPSP follows a double-blind peer review process.

  • Each manuscript is evaluated by at least two independent reviewers for originality, methodology, and scientific merit.

  • The average review time is 4–6 weeks.

  • Authors may suggest potential reviewers, but the final selection rests with the editorial board.


9. Copyright and Licensing

  • Upon acceptance, authors are required to sign a copyright transfer agreement.

  • JUPSP publishes under an open-access license, allowing non-commercial use and distribution with proper attribution.


10. Publication Charges

JUPSP charges a modest publication fee to support editorial operations and production costs. The submission and processing details are available on the journal’s website.
